Study Permit Expiring in 3 Months — and the Entry Visa Was Renewed Until 2027

Introduction:

When it comes to Canadian student visas, the in-Canada entry visa (TRV) is normally not issued beyond the validity of the study permit — that is the industry consensus. Many students and parents even treat it as an uncrossable red line. But rules are rigid; professional logic and well-reasoned requests are not. Today, we share a just-completed case that broke through.

1. At an Impasse: The Road Home Blocked by "Validity"

Student C's situation is very representative:

  • Situation: Graduated from high school in February 2026, already submitted university applications, has one university offer in hand and is waiting on others.

  • The problem: His current study permit is valid until May 28, 2026, and his entry visa has already expired.

  • His wish: With half a year to go before university starts in September, Student C desperately wants to return to China to reunite with his parents, then come back for his studies.

Student C had consulted his school's visa advisor and received a very discouraging reply: "Your study permit only has 3 months left. By convention, applying for an entry visa now carries an extremely high refusal risk. Too little time, too much risk — better to just stay in Canada."

Leave, and he might not be able to come back; stay, and face half a year alone. When Student C's father found me, his voice was full of helplessness and anxiety.

2. Breaking Through With Logic: The Officer's "Unwritten Rules"

I partly agree with the school advisor — by conventional experience, in-Canada entry visa renewals rarely exceed the study permit. But "rarely" does not mean "never."

From my understanding of how officers assess applications, the entry visa (TRV) is essentially an "entry permit." The officer's core question is: do you have a legitimate reason to enter Canada? And will you leave on time or maintain legal status after entering?

Although Student C's study permit was nearly expired, he was a high school graduate waiting on university admissions — right in the middle of an education transition, an entirely reasonable "gap period." As long as the letter of explanation (LOE) clearly addressed the following:

  1. A genuine reason to travel home: emotional reconnection and rest after graduation.

  2. A clear plan to stay in Canada: showing the university applications already submitted and future study plans.

  3. A commitment to maintaining status: a promise to complete the study permit renewal before it expires or before starting school.

I worked through the night to map out Student C's situation and wrote a letter of explanation that was both heartfelt and well-reasoned.

3. A Surprise Beyond Expectations: July 2027!

After filing, we entered the waiting period. Soon, news of the approval arrived! That was within our expectations — but the real suspense was: how long would the officer grant?

Passport mailed, visa stamped, passport returned… the moment the courier notification arrived:

The instant we checked the system, the miracle appeared: the entry visa was issued all the way to July 2027!

This meant Student C could not only travel home smoothly but would not need to worry about this "ticket" again — even into his second year of university.

4. Why Did We Break the "Curse"?

  1. A reasonable request: Although IRCC has grown stricter with student entry visas in the past two years, if an applicant's request does not push against the officer's bottom line and raises no concern about overstaying, the officer can still be persuaded.

  2. The weight of the explanation letter: Many agencies only fill out forms and never write letters. A professional LOE works like a translator, converting an applicant's "difficulty" into logic that fits immigration law.

  3. Long-term planning: Applying just for those 3 months of validity would most likely have been refused. Only by presenting a complete education pathway could the officer be generous.

A Question to Think About

Student C's entry visa now runs to 2027 — but his study permit still expires on May 28, 2026.

Share your view in the comments: after returning home, when should Student C come back to Canada? And why?

  • A. As long as the entry visa is valid, he can return any time.

  • B. He must return before the study permit expires on May 28.

  • C. He must file the study permit renewal before leaving and return with the confirmation letter.

The correct answer and professional advice — I'll reveal them in the comments!

Closing:

Visa applications are never just form-filling; they are a contest of rules and logic. Dead ends sometimes have another way through — it just takes a fresh look at the rules.
